The design of Med Uni Campus Graz is based on the integration of learning, research, work, and public spaces within a single urban campus. While responding to a wide range of functional requirements, the project creates a clearly organized ensemble of cohesive yet distinct building volumes. Openness, accessibility, and communication are central design principles. The arrangement of the buildings establishes a dynamic relationship between architecture and open space, as well as between public and private functions, giving the campus a strong identity within its urban context.
The program extends beyond the conventional university campus model. In addition to the specialized requirements of medical research, the campus accommodates a high level of public activity. To address these diverse needs, the project organizes its functions vertically. The long, slender building forms were developed in response to Graz's local microclimate, allowing fresh air to circulate efficiently throughout the site.
The main teaching facilities, including lecture halls and the central auditorium, occupy the lower levels of the campus. Above them is the Campus Level, which serves as the primary circulation platform, providing access to the institutes, laboratories, and research facilities. A pedestrian and cycling bridge connects this level with additional teaching spaces, the cafeteria, and the administrative buildings, creating an integrated network of pedestrian and bicycle routes that also links directly to Graz University Hospital.
Med Uni Campus Graz has been certified by both ÖGNI and DGNB and received the Platinum Certificate in recognition of its outstanding sustainability performance and sociocultural quality. Following the Austrian State Prize for Architecture in 2023 and the KOOP Award in 2024, the project received several additional international awards in 2025, including the German Design Award, the Bronze Prize in the Architectural Design category at the Design Educates Awards, and the Best of Best Award at the 4 Future Awards.
